After Sunday’s zanny Twitter Party I shut down my computer and made my way to Beacon’s Closet, in Williamsburg, in search of a few new accessories to add to my winter wardrobe. Beacon’s Closet is a fun place to buy, sell, and trade vintage and modern clothing & accessories. From the $30 Diane von Furstenberg dress to the random fur fanny pack--there’s always something adorable and affordable to covet and take home.
Accessorizing is my secret way of enhancing what I wear without spending a fortune, so selecting unique vintage accessories is important. I’ve found that in most instances adding change in eyeglass frames, a scarf, or a jewel is all that’s needed to add extravagance to an outfit that starts out flat. The only rule to remember is: apply good taste and emphasize what’s most important to you. My personal favorites? Earrings, necklaces, scarves, and of course glasses!
While at Beacon’s I spoke with Jonathan and Carlie, both managers, to find out what pieces they are looking to buy for the fall based on trends. I learned that when it comes to winter accessories, colors and patterns may change from season to season, but "people are simply looking to buy what’s going to keep them warm". So hats, leather gloves, earmuffs, and scarves are what they want to buy from sellers and what gets purchased first by shoppers. They also shared that when it comes to scarves “the bigger, the better” and that items made from natural fibers, such as cashmere and wool, are always the most popular.
I looked at shoes, tried on bags, picked up earrings, snapped a few photos, and before I knew it, it was 8p, closing time. I guess that means that I’ll have to wander into Beacon’s beautiful closet for more shopping soon.
